Homage to Soil

2019

Soil is the foundation of life. It is the combination of water, oxygen and minerals, which makes all plant and animal life possible. We tend to neglect the importance of soil. We also often discount the fact that different types of soil have different fertility, and that within the same ecosystem certain species can thrive but not others.

While working in Southern Utah I came across large mounds of soil striped in different colors, from green, to yellow, to red, to white. Their diverse mineral compositions allowed the colors to coexist in the same site. I decided to document this biodiversity using Plexiglas cubes which I have employed as framing devices throughout my career. I made a series of photographic studies documenting my findings. However, this project is more than just a visual document, it is an homage to soil.
